Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification for Medical Device Simulation
Thu, Aug 27, 2026 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM CDT
Computational modeling and simulation are increasingly used in medical device development, but its effective use requires confidence that the simulation produces accurate predictions for its context of use. Establishing this confidence can be challenging. Simulation results may be affected by uncertainty in model parameters, material properties, boundary conditions, manufacturing variation, patient characteristics, or other real-world factors. Understanding and accounting for these uncertainties is an important part of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification, or VVUQ.
This course provides practical training on using SmartUQ software for medical device simulation VVUQ. An emphasis will be placed on the validation and uncertainty quantification aspects of VVUQ. Topics will include using SmartUQ for:
• Sensitivity analysis to identify the inputs and uncertainties that have the greatest influence on device performance.
• Uncertainty propagation to quantify variability and the probability of simulation outcomes.
• Statistical model calibration to achieve better agreement between models and data from test, experiments, or clinical observations.
• Surrogate modeling to make analyses practical even when the original simulation is computationally expensive.
Relevant concepts from ASME VVUQ 40 will also be discussed to provide context for how the analyses performed in SmartUQ can contribute to medical device simulation credibility.
